Learn About Benjamin Stoddert Middle School
Benjamin Stoddert Middle School is located at 2040 St. Thomas Drive in Waldorf, MD. It is named for Benjamin Stoddert. In 1798, he was appointed to be the first Secretary of the Navy by President John Adams. During his four-year term, he helped build a fleet of vessels powerful enough to compete with those of the French. Stoddert also helped draft the legislation that established the modern United States Marine Corps.
Before becoming Secretary of the Navy, Stoddert and one of his business associates bought several tracts of land in the District of Columbia at the request of President George Washington. Stoddert later sold the tracts of land to the government. This was done to prevent speculation when the capital moved from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C.
Stoddert was born in Charles County in 1751. He died in Bladensburg, Maryland, on December 18, 1813.
