The City of Salisbury, often called the “Capital of the Eastern Shore,” is a vibrant community with a rich history and a convenient central location. |
It is the County Seat of Wicomico County, and the largest city on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Salisbury serves as the commercial hub of the Delmarva Peninsula and is strategically located at the head of the Wicomico River, a position that historically made it an ideal center for trade. Many historians believe the city was named after Salisbury, England.
Salisbury also played a role in the Civil War, serving as an encampment site for Union forces who were tasked with identifying Southern sympathizers and disrupting the flow of supplies to the Confederacy.
The city faced significant challenges in the 19th century, suffering major fires in 1860 and 1886 that each destroyed roughly two-thirds of the town. Despite these setbacks, the region continued to grow. When Wicomico County was formed in 1867 from portions of Somerset County and Worcester County, Salisbury was designated as the new county’s governmental center.
Today, Salisbury continues to thrive as a regional hub, attracting a diverse array of businesses and serving as home to numerous county, state, and Federal Government offices.
