Welcome to the City of Salisbury, Maryland
We are glad that you are searching for real estate information on our site. This information is located on a page that is not maintained by DMS Properties, LLC Residential Real Estate Services. The City of Salisbury, Maryland is known as the “Capital of the Eastern Shore.”
It is the County Seat of Wicomico County, Maryland. Salisbury is the largest city in Maryland’s Eastern Shore region. It is also the commercial hub of the Delmarva Peninsula.
Salisbury is located at the head of the Wicomico River. This made it a convenient location for trading purposes. It is believed by many historians that the City was named after the City of Salisbury, England.
Salisbury also had a role in the Civil War. It served as a location where Union forces encamped in order to search for sympathizers from the South. These Union forces also worked to slow or stop the movement of supplies to Confederate forces in the South.
Disaster struck Salisbury in 1860 and again in 1886. Each time, fires burned through two-thirds of the Town. Wicomico County continued to grow, though, and Salisbury was considered to be the heart, or major town, of the county. Wicomico County was formed in 1867 out of parts of Somerset County and Worcester County. Salisbury then became the seat of government. Today, the City of Salisbury attracts a wide variety of different businesses. It also is home to government offices for the County, State of Maryland and Federal Government.
