On October 27, 2005, the Prince Georges County Board of Education unanimously approved a motion to name the New Regional High School in Upper Marlboro after Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. He was the first African-American physician in the county to be admitted to practice at Prince George’s Hospital. He was also a mentor to hundreds of Prince George’s County residents. Along with his wife, Roberta Wise, he founded the Youth Motivational Program. It provided training to more than 1,000 young people in the region and scholarships worth more than $25,000. Dr. Wise also served in the Armed Forces as a Tuskegee airman. He received the Purple Heart. Dr. Wise also received the Air Medal for Combat Missions flown in World War II. He was awarded the Certificate of Valor for Courage in Combat and the Tuskegee Airmen Pioneer Award for Distinguished Service and Historic Achievement.
By changing the name of the school, the Board of Education hoped to motivate, guide, and inspire its students to reach the highest levels of academic excellence and build a foundation of future community leaders who share the same principles Dr. Wise taught and demonstrated in his lifetime.
