Learn about Garrett Park Elementary School
Garrett Park Elementary School is located in Kensington, MD 20895.
The original Garrett Park Elementary School had its beginnings in 1893 as a one-room building. Seven grades were taught in that building. All of the classes were taught by one teacher. The enrollment at the time averaged between 20 and 25 students.
In time, that building became to0 small. In 1928, a new building was built on a large plot of land. It was donated farm land that was located on the edge of town. The new school opened as a two-room school. It had two teachers and offered six grades. That building is now used as an on-side day care center.
There were some years of declining enrollment. Community support helped the school grow again. In 1952, the red brick portion of the current building was dedicated. Two additions to the building were added that included more classrooms. The Marlow Media Center was added in 1974. A new 3-classroom addition was completed in the Fall of 1992. Another 8-room addition was completed in 2006. The new modernized school opened in 2012.
