J. P. Ryon Elementary School is located in Waldorf, Maryland. The school is named for James P. Ryon.
He was an active Republican in Charles County for nearly four decades. Ryon’s political career began when he was elected to the position of County Commissioner in 1905. In 1918 he was elected County Treasurer. Ryon also served on the County Welfare and County Road boards.
In addition to being a politician, Ryon was a businessman. He served as president of the board of directors of a La Plata bank. Ryon owned a general store in Waldorf that opened in 1901. Later, he and his brother, Samuel, established Ryon Funeral home. After Ryon married his second wife Ula Huntt, he renamed the funeral home Huntt & Ryon. Today it is known as the Huntt Funeral Home.
Throughout his political and business endeavors, Ryon was a tobacco dealer. He served on the Maryland State Tobacco Authority from the mid-1940’s to 1960. James P. Ryon died in 1963.
