Mary H. Matula Elementary School is located in La Plata, MD. It is named for Mary H. Matula. She was the co-founder of the Charles County Science Fair. Matula began her 36-year career as a science teacher in 1949 at La Plata High School.
Matula was born on May 21, 1927 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Charles and Teresa Howell. She attended St. Nicholas elementary and high schools in Wilkes-Barre. She later received a Bachelor of Science degree from College Misericordia in Dallas, Pennsylvania.
During her teaching career, Matula founded the La Plata High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. She served as department chairperson and sponsored the yearbook, cheerleading and student council.
Matula also served as president of the Education Association of Charles County. She was a member of the Charles County branch of the American Cancer Society, the Charles County Community Concerts Association and the parish council of Sacred Heart Church.
Matula met her husband, Robert, while teaching at La Plata. He was a physical education teacher and coach at the high school. The two married on Aug. 26, 1950.
