Our Renter Housing Market Sentiment Survey

This survey was designed to help us understand the attitudes of people who are renting a home.  The questions are of a general nature only.  We are not asking for any personal, confidential or financial information.  The information that you provide will be used so that we can better help our clients with their housing. 

We would also like to help you with all of your real estate needs.  There are Nine Reasons that You Should Use a Licensed Agent to help you with the real estate process.

Here’s What We Have Learned So Far

People who have responded to the survey tell us that:

• 70.6% are renting a home;
• 29.4% are living with (renting from) relatives.

We also learned that:

• 35.3% have been renting for less than a year;
• 17.6% have been renting for between 1 year and 2 years;
• 47.1% have been renting for over 2 years.

There are several reasons why people are still renting.  Here’s what we learned:

• Credit scores are an issue for 24.0%;
• Lack of a down payment is an issue for 24.0%;
• High housing prices are an issue for 16.0%;
• High interest rates are an issue for 16.0%;
• Fear that can’t qualify for a mortgage is an issue for 12.0%;
• Not knowing where to live is an issue for 8.0%.

In many neighborhoods, it may be cheaper to buy a home than it is to rent a comparable home.  We found that:

• 17.6% knew that to be the case;
• 52.9% are skeptical;
• 29.5% didn’t know that but are curious.

People who own a home have a personal net worth that is considerably higher than people who rent.  Here’s what we learned:

• 76.5% know this to be true;
• 23.5% did not know or did not care.

The timing of buying a home varies from person to person.  Here’s what we were told:

• 41.2% are looking to buy a home within the next 12 months;
• 41.2% are looking to buy a home within the next 24 months;
• 17.6% do not want to buy a home.

We’re finding this information very helpful and interesting.  The more participants we have, the better the data collection will be.
