Walter Johnson High School is in the community of Bethesda, Maryland. The school is located at 6400 Rock Spring Drive. It is also known as Walter Johnson and WJHS.
The school serves portions of Bethesda, North Bethesda, and Rockville, as well as the towns of Garrett Park and Kensington. It is a part of Montgomery County Public Schools.
The school first opened to grades 10-12 in 1956. It was named after Walter Johnson. He was a local baseball pitcher, manager and politician. Johnson was born on November 6, 1887. He died on December 10, 1946. He played for the Washington Senators from 1907 to 1927.
The school’s original mascot was the Spartan. The mascot was changed to the Mighty Moo in 1963. That mascot was named after the cows that roamed the fields before the school was built. After a 1987 consolidation with nearby Charles W. Woodward High School, Walter Johnson High School maintained its school colors of white and green. The school adopted Woodward’s mascot, “Wild Thing” the Wildcat.
