Washington Dulles International Airport is one of three major airports that serve the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan area.
It is located in Dulles, Virginia and is approximately 25 miles from the City of Washington, DC. The airport is named after John Foster Dulles. He was Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Dulles served in that position from 1953 to 1959. Congress passed the Washington Airport Act of 1950. The Act provided for “. . . the construction, protection, operation, and maintenance of a public airport in or in the vicinity of the District of Columbia.” It was amended in 1958.
