The school is named in honor of Thomas Carlyle (T. C.) Martin, who served as Charles County Superintendent of Schools from 1951 to 1955. When his four-year term ended, the Board of Education chose not to reappoint him for a second term. The decision sparked strong community response, with several residents protesting and a Pomonkey PTA member even threatening to force the Board’s resignation. Despite these efforts, the Board upheld its decision. Martin responded with professionalism, urging the community to support his successor and continue working together to build the strongest possible school system.
T. C. Martin was born on April 13, 1896, in Independence, VA. He began his career in education during the 1920s at Buffalo High School in West Virginia. In 1924, he became principal of Sardia High School in West Virginia. He later served as principal of Brandywine High School and Hughesville Elementary School in Maryland.
Martin married his first wife, Rae Glover, in 1922. She was a teacher in Morgantown, WV. After her death in 1955, he married his second wife, Ola Murray, a teacher from Beaverdam, VA. Although Martin had no children of his own, he was deeply devoted to the welfare of all children. Those who knew him recall that he personally drove a handicapped polio victim to school each day and provided shoes and money to children in need.
T. C. Martin passed away on October 6, 1977, at the age of 81, leaving a legacy of compassion, dedication, and service to education.
