Learn About Bryantown, Maryland

Bryanstown is a community located in Charles County.  It shares a border to the north with the community of Waldorf.  Located to the east is the community of Hughesville.  Bryantown shares a border to the west with the community of White Plains.  Located to the south is the community of La Plata and the community of Charlotte Hall.

Bryantown stands on land known as Boarman’s Manor.  It was a 4,000-acre manor that was granted to Major William Boarman in 1674.  Bryantown is associated with the attempted escape of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassin John Wilkes Booth in 1865.  St. Mary’s Catholic Church is the burial place of Dr. Samuel Mudd.  He lived 5 miles to the north.  Mudd met Booth for the first time at the church  in November 1864.

Oakland was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.  It is a two-story, three-bay brick dwelling constructed in the Federal style between 1822 and 1823.  About 1880, the Greek Revival entrance and the Italianate front porch were constructed.   The Bryantown Historic District was listed in 1985.  The Lindens was listed in 1990.  It is a two-story frame house built during the second quarter of the 19th century in the Federal style.
