Learn about Hughesville, Maryland

Hughesville is a small community in Charles County, located in the heart of Southern Maryland.  It borders Waldorf to the north, Charlotte Hall to the south, and Bryantown to the west.  To the east, it is adjacent to Aquasco in Prince George’s County and the Patuxent River.

Historically, Hughesville developed as a tobacco market town, serving the surrounding agricultural region.  Many of the former tobacco warehouses have been repurposed and now house thrift stores, boutique gift shops, and small local businesses.  This preserves a connection to the town’s past.

Despite its modest size, Hughesville is often considered the geographic center of the tri-county Southern Maryland region.  The community is home to the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO).  It operates a 5.5-megawatt solar facility capable of powering approximately 600 homes while offsetting emissions comparable to about 1,600 vehicles.

The area also includes several regional institutions, such as the Tri-County Animal Shelter, the Southern Maryland Association of Realtors, and a women’s homeless shelter.  In addition, the College of Southern Maryland  established one of its campuses in Hughesville, contributing to the area’s educational resources.

Transportation improvements have played a key role in shaping the modern community.  A multi-lane bypass along Maryland Route 5 was completed in 2007.  It significantly reduced congestion by routing through-traffic around the town’s former single-signal intersection.  The bypass features a pair of adjacent roundabouts, an uncommon design in the region.  Hughesville does not have a traditional street grid.  Most commercial activity is concentrated along the highway corridor, with a limited number of small residential developments nearby.

A notable historic property in the area is Truman’s Place, a home originally constructed around 1770 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Hughesville encompasses approximately 11.2 square miles, of which about 11.12 square miles is land and 0.08 square miles is water.
