Accokeek is located approximately 17 miles south of Washington, DC.  It is within Prince George’s County.  To the north, it borders Fort Washington and Clinton, while to the east, it borders Brandywine.  To the south, Accokeek shares borders with Bryans Road, Bensville, and Waldorf, all within Charles County.  To the west, the community is bordered by the Potomac River.

The area around Accokeek has a rich history.  It was initially inhabited by Native Americans from around 2,000 BCE.  John Smith was the first European to settle in the area in 1608.  The name “Accokeek” comes from the Algonquin language and means “at the edge of the hill.”

West of Route 210, much of Accokeek is designated as the “Moyoane Reserve.”  It is characterized by mid-century homes on spacious wooded lots of at least 5 acres.  There are two notable educational attractions in Accokeek.  One is Hard Bargain Farm that is managed by the Ferguson Foundation.  The other is the National Colonial Farm under the National Park Service.  These sites host various events, including an annual Oktoberfest and outdoor theater performances.

In 1960, protests led to President John F. Kennedy designating 133 acres around Mockley Point as a national landmark.  This protected the view of Mount Vernon and Fort Washington Park from potential development by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC).  Additional donations expanded this conservation effort, preserving the area’s natural beauty.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Accokeek covers a total area of 28.8 square miles, with 27.4 square miles being land and 1.4 square miles consisting of water.  The community sits at an average elevation of 194 feet.

Accokeek experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by warm summers with average temperatures above 72°F and cold winters where temperatures range between 27 to 64°F.  The area receives more precipitation from May to July than any other months, with an annual average of 39 inches.
