Accokeek has a rich and layered history.  It was inhabited by Native Americans as early as 2,000 BCE.  The first European contact in 1608 was by John Smith.   The name “Accokeek” comes from the Algonquin language, meaning “at the edge of the hill.”

In 1960, local protests led President John F. Kennedy to designate 133 acres around Mockley Point as a national landmark, preserving views of Mount Vernon and Fort Washington Park from development by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC).  Subsequent land donations expanded these conservation efforts, protecting the area’s natural beauty.  West of Route 210, Accokeek includes the Moyoane Reserve, featuring mid-century homes on wooded lots of at least 5 acres, offering a spacious and private suburban lifestyle.

Accokeek is home to notable educational and cultural attractions.  They include Hard Bargain Farm, managed by the Ferguson Foundation and National Colonial Farm, part of the National Park Service.  These sites host a variety of events, including an annual Oktoberfest and outdoor theater performances, making Accokeek a center for local history and community engagement.
