Learn About Arnold, Maryland

Arnold is a community in Anne Arundel County.  It is located 5 miles from the City of Annapolis, about 19 miles south of the City of Baltimore and 30 miles east of the City of Washington, DC.  Arnold is on the scenic Broadneck Peninsula.  the community  is bordered by the community of Severna Park to the northwest, the City of Annapolis to the southwest, and the community of Pasadena to the northeast.

Native Americans at one time lived in this region of Maryland during pre-Columbian times.  This is based on artifacts that were found in the Ulmstead Point area of Arnold.  The artifacts date back to the Archaic period (5000–1500 BC).  Later tribes that have been in the area include the Algonquin tribes, among others.  When Captain John Smith arrived in the area in 1608, though, he did not find any Natives.

The early settlement of Arnold, an area between the Magothy and Severn rivers, began with the farm of John Arnold.  He was a veteran of the War of 1812.  He acquired 300 acres of land on the north side of the Severn River.  One of his sons, Thomas Arnold, inherited the land.  Arnold later worked as the local station master for the Baltimore and Annapolis Short Line Railroad.

Residents of Arnold know that the area was home to a racetrack in the present-day Revell-Downs planned community.  There was also a rollercoaster and boardwalk in Mago Vista Beach.  Arnold has a total area of 13.6 square miles.  Of that area, 10.8 square miles is land and 2.7 square miles is water.  The water includes the tidal Severn River to the southwest and the Magothy River to the northeast.
