Learn About Ashton, Maryland
Ashton is a community located in Montgomery County. It shares a border to the north with the community of Highland and the community of Brookeville. Located to the east is the community of Fulton. Ashton shares a border to the west with the community of Olney. Located to the south is the community of Spencerville.
The history of Ashton is unclear. Some longtime residents claim that it comes from reference to a large ash tree that stood at the junction of routes 108 and 650. Route 650 is known as New Hampshire Avenue. It runs from near the community of Damascus all the way through Ashton south into the City of Washington, DC. Other residents have said that it was developed by combining the names of two Thomas family homes, Ashland and Clifton. Each of these homes are located one mile from the junction. The United States Census Bureau combines Ashton with the nearby community of Sandy Spring to form the community of Ashton-Sandy Spring. All census data are tabulated for this combined entity.
The “Ashton Master Plan” developed in 1998 contains a vision “to preserve the character of Sandy Spring/Ashton as an historic rural community.” This goal is in conflict with the growing trend towards development in the area. The plan itself notes that “reliance on a zoning strategy that permitted large-lot, low-density development pattern and clustering around the village centers has not been as effective in maintaining the rural character, as originally envisioned.”
