Learn about Boonsboro, Maryland

Boonsboro is a town situated in Washington County, near the border with Frederick County.  Nestled at the foot of South Mountain, it lies close to the renowned Antietam National Battlefield.  Keedysville is located to its west, and Rohrersville to its south.

Local tradition suggests Boonsboro was founded by George Boone, cousin of Daniel Boone.  Initially named “Margaretsville” after his wife, the town was officially incorporated as Boonesborough in 1831.  Over time, the name evolved to Boonsboro, preferred by local newspapers and residents, though traces of the former name appeared on documents as late as 1903.

Boonsboro played a pivotal role during the American Civil War, witnessing two battles within its borders and serving as a crucial site for caring for wounded soldiers after the Battle of Antietam in 1862.

Located on what was once the National Road, now known as the Old National Pike or Alt-U.S. 40, Boonsboro’s Main Street follows this historic route established in 1758 to expedite travel between Fredericktown and Fort Frederick during the Seven Years’ War.

The town faced significant challenges, including fires at Asaro’s in 2007 and at a historic inn in 2008, which delayed its renovation until it reopened as The Inn BoonsBoro a year later.  This charming inn is owned by best-selling romance novelist Nora Roberts.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Boonsboro covers a total area of 2.91 square miles, with 2.90 square miles being land and 0.01 square miles consisting of waterways.  Boonsboro is renowned for its proximity to the Appalachian Trail, just 1 mile west of the town, making it a popular destination for hikers.  It also serves as the starting point for the JFK 50-mile race held annually in November.
