Mitchellville is an upper-class community in Prince George’s County. It shares a border to the north with the community of Lanham and another area of Bowie. Mitchellville shares a border to the west with the community of Landover. Located to the south is the community of Largo and the community of Upper Marlboro. Located to the east is the community of Crofton and the community of Davidsonville, both in Anne Arundel County.
This location is also now known as South Bowie. It has a total area of 5.0 square miles and all of it is land. Mitchellville was named for John Mitchell. He lived from 1788 to 1862. Mitchell owned Essington Hall. It was a plantation that encompassed much of the area. He and his wife, Mary Lanham, are buried in the Mitchell Family Cemetery on Mitchellville and Mount Oak Road.
