Bryans Road is a community located in northern Charles County. It was named after Oliver Norris Bryan. He was a 19th-century farmer and scientist. Bryan owned and operated Locust Grove Farm near Marshall Hall. The area consisted mostly of tobacco farms until the Naval Proving Grounds was established in The Town of Indian Head in 1890. Marshall Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Bryans Road has a total area of 15.38 square miles and all of it is land. Some commercial establishments came about by the early 1920s, when the name “Bryans Road” first appeared on maps. The construction of the Indian Head Highway during World War II brought new traffic. By the early 1960s, Bryans Road became an established bedroom community.
At the main intersection in Bryans Road, there is a shopping center that includes various gas stations and assorted retail stores that serve the community. Many local residents commute to the Naval Suport Center Indian Head. Others commute to employment centers throughout the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The central part of Bryans Road is now dominated by a large water tower located just behind the fire department. Maryland Airport, the only airport in Charles County, is located nearby. Bryans Road shares a border with the community of Accokeek in southern Prince George’s County to the north. To the south is the Town of Indian Head. It shares a border with part of the community of Waldorf and the community of Pomfret to the east. Finally, to the west is the Potomac River, where there is a boat ramp. Bryans Road is the home to two Charles County Public Schools. They are J.C. Parks Elementary School, and Matthew Henson Middle School.
