Burkittsville was founded by two property owners, Major Joshua Harley and Henry Burkitt. The western half of the village was first established as “Harley’s Post Office” in 1824. After Harley’s death in 1828, Henry Burkitt renamed the community Burkittsville. Over the next thirty years, the village grew to include stores, shops, blacksmiths, a schoolhouse, and a tannery.
On September 14, 1862, Burkittsville was the site of the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, which was part of the larger Battle of South Mountain during the Civil War. Confederate cavalry under the command of Colonel Thomas Munford and General J.E.B. Stuart occupied the village. The Reformed and Lutheran churches, along with the adjacent schoolhouse, were used as hospitals to treat more than 300 wounded soldiers from both sides. These historic buildings still stand today.
