California is a community in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. The community shares a border with the community of Hollywood to the northeast. It shares a border with the community of Lexington Park and Callaway to the south.
California has been growing with the spread of population from the older surrounding communities and the growth in both technology-related and defense-related jobs at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. There are department stores and numerous shopping centers situated along Three Notch Road.
Maryland Route 4 crosses Three Notch Road. It leads to the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge. This allows people to travel over the Patuxent River to the town of Solomons located in Calvert County.
The community was named after the state of California before 1897. The exact origin is unknown. One story is that a family from the state moved to the area. They apparently used materials from their home state to build their new house. The home was called the “California Farmstead.”
According to the United States Census Bureau, California has a total area of 14.8 square miles. Of that area, 12.8 square miles is land and 1.9 square miles is water.
