Learn about Cobb Island, Maryland
Cobb Island is a small island community in southern Charles County. It is located at the confluence of the Potomac River and Wicomico River. Cobb Island is approximately 45 miles south of Washington, DC. Despite the distance, it is considered to be within the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. Cobb Island is separated from the mainland and the community of Newburg by Neale Sound. There is a 0.11-mile-long fixed bridge that carries Maryland Route 254.
The community has a small post office, a volunteer fire department and rescue squad, and a Baptist church. There is a large community green space called Fisherman’s Field and a small playground for children.
On December 23, 1900, Reginald Aubrey Fessenden sent and received the first intelligible speech by electromagnetic waves. This was done on a pair of masts that were 50 feet high and 1 mile apart on Cobb Island. Fessenden was using a spark transmitter with the Kintner-Brashear interrupter.
