Hydes is a community located in the Long Green Valley in Baltimore County. It shares a border to the north with the community of Jarrettsville. Located to the east is the community of Fallston. Hydes shares a border to the west with the community of Phoenix. Located to the south is the community of Glen Arm.
Saint John the Evangelist church is located in Hydes. It is the oldest Roman Catholic Church in Baltimore County. Until 1958, this community was served by the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad at milepost 16.8. Hydes is also home to several wineries, including Boordy and Dejon Vineyards.
Hydes is named for Samuel N. Hyde. He was an agronomist who developed a strain known as “Egyptian” sweet corn. The product was canned by the F.B. Jenkins canning operation of Hydes.
