Learn About Laurel, Maryland

Laurel is a city located almost midway between the City of Washington, DC and the City of Baltimore, MD.  The Laurel city limits are entirely in northern Prince George’s County.  Three of the zip codes for Laurel communities extend into Anne Arundel County and Howard County.  A very small part of Laurel is located in Montgomery County.

Laurel was founded in the early 19th century as a mill town.  Over the years, it expanded its local industry.  Laurel was able to become an early commuter town for workers in Washington and Baltimore.  This happened after the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad arrived in 1835.  There is a historic district on Main Street that highlights the city’s industrial past.  The Department of Defense has several facilities in the Laurel area, including the Fort George G. Meade Army Base.

Laurel is largely residential today.  It is on the banks of the Patuxent River.  The river provided power for the cotton mills that were the city’s early industry.  According to the United States Census Bureau, Laurel has a total area of 4.33 square miles.  Of that area, 4.30 square miles is land and 0.03 square miles is water.
