Lusby is a community located near the southern end of Calvert County. North of Lusby are is the Town of St. Leonard and also the community of Broomes Island. Lusby shares a border to the southwest with the town of Solomons. Much of the community is somewhat rural, but Lusby shares a border to the southeast with Chesapeake Ranch Estates. It is a large community governed by a homeowners’ association. It shares a border to the south with the community of Drum Point. It is located across tidal Mill Creek. Lusby is surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay to the east and the Patuxent River to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, Lusby has a total area of 3.7 square miles. Of that area, 3.5 square miles is land and 0.15 square miles is water.
Dominion Cove Point LNG is one of the nation’s largest liquefied natural gas import facilities. It is in the northeast part of Lusby. Also, the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant is 5 miles north of the Lusby central business district. Maryland Route 2/4 runs along the western edge of Lusby. The road leads south to the Naval Air Systems Command (Patuxent River) and north from Lusby to Joint Base Andrews. It also provides easy access to The City of Washington, DC and also the City of Annapolis.
Lusby is home to Patuxent High School. There is also a middle school and three elementary schools in the community. Lusby has a central business district that has grown rapidly. Three shopping centers have been built. They brought new grocery stores, restaurants, and other businesses to Lusby. Several new roads have either been built in Lusby or are in planning stages. They are designed to ease traffic congestion in Lusby to and from the Chesapeake Ranch Estates and Drum Point communities.
Lusby also features Cove Point Park. It has numerous baseball, soccer, and lacrosse fields. There is also a public swimming pool. Chesapeake Hills Golf Course is a public course located near Cove Point Park. There is also a private air field owned and operated by the Chesapeake Ranch Estates and Drum Point communities. One place of interest in Lusby is the Cove Point Lighthouse. It is on the Chesapeake Bay and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Calvert Cliffs State Park is also located just to the north of Lusby.
