Learn About Marriottsville, Maryland

Marriottsville is a community that is located to the west of Baltimore City, Maryland.  Portions of the community are situated in Howard County, in Carroll County and in Baltimore County.  The community is located along Marriottsville Road.  It is near the Carroll County line and is about 10 miles north-northwest of the City of Columbia.

Marriottsville is named after the estate of General Richard Marriott.  Marriott was an heir of John Marriott of Severn.  He settled in Anne Arundel County in 1664.  The land was originally part of a large section of land patented by Charles Carroll of Carrollton.  Waverley slave plantation originally occupied much of the land.  It was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County.  The village was home to a magnesium limestone quarry.

On March 22, 1836, a railroad car derailed.  The train was demonstrating the new railroad technology.  It had 40 city leaders on board.  In 1866, Reese’s Mill was washed out by regional flooding.

From 1965 to 1974, large tracts of Marriottsville were purchased by land speculators who anticipated development.  This area was once known as Alpha.  In 1977, the County Executive chose Marriottsville for a landfill site.  Alpha Ridge Landfill opened in May 1980.  An expansion plan was suspended after it was reported that there was contamination of the groundwater.  In 1998, Waverly Woods Golf Club opened in Marriottsville.
