Middle River shares a border to the north with the community of Nottingham. The Middle River Train Station first appeared on the 1877 G.M. Hopkins & Company’s Baltimore County Map. The town expanded during the 1930s and 1940s. It established the “Aero Acres” housing community. The neighborhood borders the railroad tracks and Martin Boulevard and served as housing for people working at the Martin Aerospace Company. For this development, the architecture firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed gable-roofed Cape Cod houses with dimensions of 24 feet by 28 feet. The homes featured large commercial-style windows in their main rooms. In 1941 a total of 600 homes were built at Aero Acres. They were all of the same and were made from a cement/asbestos material known as Cemento.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 8.5 square miles. Of that area, 7.7 square miles is land and 0.7 square miles is water.
