Washington Grove is a town located in central Montgomery County. It shares a border to the north with the community of Montgomery Village. Located to the east is the community of Olney. Washington Grove shares a border to the west with the community of Gaithersburg. Located to the south is the community of Derwood.
The Washington Grove Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 0.34 square miles. Of that area 0.002 square miles is water. The town sits on a ridge that drains northwest to Whetstone Run. That is a tributary of Great Seneca Creek. The ridge also drains to the southeast to Mill Creek. That is a tributary of Rock Creek. Seneca and Rock Creek are both south-flowing tributaries of the Potomac River.
