Learn About Charles County, Maryland

Charles County is part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area and the Southern Maryland region.  The County was created in 1658 by an Order in Council.  Charles County was named for Charles Calvert.  He was the third Baron Baltimore and lived from 1637 to 1715.  There was also an earlier Charles County.  It existed from 1650 to 1653 and is sometimes referred to as Old Charles County.

Charles County, MarylandCharles County has had some historical events over the years.  In April 1865, John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln.  That occurred at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, DC.  He made his escape, though, through Charles County on his way to Virginia.   

In 1926, a tornado ripped through the County leaving 17 people dead.  That included 13 schoolchildren.  

On April 28, 2002, another tornado destroyed much of downtown La Plata.  The Town of La Plata serves as the County Seat for Charles County.

On December 4, 2004, an arson took place in the development of Hunters Brooke.  The community is located few miles southeast of the Town of Indian Head.  This was the largest residential arson in Maryland history.

The Seal of Charles County, MarylandCharles County is bordered mostly by the Potomac River and the State of Virginia to the west and south.  It is also bordered by Prince George’s County to the north and Saint Mary’s County to the east.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Charles County has an area of 643 square miles.  There are 458 square miles of land and 185 square miles of water. 

The Charles County water area includes several rivers.  They are the Potomac River, Wicomico River, and Port Tobacco River.  There is also the Mattawoman Creek and the Nanjemoy Creek.  All of these tributaries lead into the Chesapeake Bay.
