Learn About Chestertown, Maryland
Chestertown is a town in Kent County. It is located on the State of Maryland’s Eastern Shore and is the county seat.
Chestertown was founded in 1706. The town rose in stature when it was named one of the English colonies of Maryland’s six Royal Ports of Entry. It is located at the navigable head of the Chester River. The shipping boom that followed made the town wealthy. At the time of the first census in 1790, Chestertown was the geographical center of population of the United States. Chestertown was incorporated in 1805, and was named for the Chester River. In the mid-eighteenth century, Chestertown trailed only the City of Annapolis and was considered Maryland’s second leading port.
A growing merchant class infused riches into the town. This was shown in the many brick mansions and townhouses that sprang up along the waterfront. Another area in which Chestertown is second only to Annapolis is in its number of existing eighteenth century homes.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.91 square miles. That total area includes 2.60 square miles of land and 0.31 square of water. Chestertown has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and cool, wet winters.
