Learn About Marydel, Maryland

Marydel is an incorporated town located in Caroline County.  It is located on the State of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.  Its name is what is known as a portmanteau.  That means that its name is based on its location.  Marydel is partially located in Maryland and partially in Delaware.  The town shares a border with the State of Delaware to the east.  The community of Barclay and the community of Ignleside are located to the west.  Marydel shares a border with the community of Henderson to the south.  According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.08 square miles and all of it is land. 

Marydel was originally known as Halltown.  The town was settled by Austro-Hungarian Catholic farmers around 1914.  This was around the time that Europe entered World War I.  Some immigrants from that area came to the United States.

In recent times, beginning in the 1990s, Marydel became home to a large community of Hispanic immigrants of Guatemalan descent.  The majority of these Guatemalan immigrants came from an agricultural, rural, mountainous regions in Guatemala, making them feel at home in rural, agricultural Caroline County.  This community is mostly Spanish speaking.  Some of the Guatemalan Mam dialect is mixed in.  Many of Marydel’s Guatemalans have become permanent residents and American citizens.

Publisher James Gordon Bennett Jr. participated in a duel near Marydel in 1877.
