The community is largely rural, with relatively few homes spread across large lots. Most of the residential development in this part of the county is concentrated in Indian Head, while Marbury has retained its quiet, countryside character.
Marbury gained attention on April 28, 2002, when a tornado touched down in the area. The storm then traveled east across the county and eventually devastated much of the Town of La Plata, the county seat.
Nearby Smallwood State Park, located in Rison, is a popular recreational destination. The park is named for William Smallwood, a Revolutionary War officer and former governor of Maryland. It features Smallwood’s Retreat, Sweden Point Marina, and an art gallery. The park has also hosted numerous fishing tournaments, including events associated with the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society Bassmaster series.
