Cobb Island is a small island community in southern Charles County, located at the confluence of the Potomac River and the Wicomico River. It lies approximately 45 miles south of Washington, DC, and despite the distance, it is considered part of the Washington metropolitan area. Cobb Island is separated from the mainland and the nearby community of Newburg by Neale Sound and is connected by a fixed bridge measuring 0.11 miles in length that carries Maryland Route 254.
The community is home to a small post office, a volunteer fire department and rescue squad, and a Baptist church. Cobb Island also features a large community green space known as Fisherman’s Field, as well as a small playground for children.
On December 23, 1900, Reginald Aubrey Fessenden sent and received the first intelligible speech transmitted by electromagnetic waves. The transmission took place using two 50-foot masts positioned one mile apart on Cobb Island. Fessenden employed a spark transmitter equipped with a Kintner-Brashear interrupter.
