Learn about Great Mills, Maryland

Great Mills is an unincorporated community in St. Mary’s County.  Located near Lexington Park and the Naval Air Systems Command (Patuxent River), it is primarily a suburban area for commuters working at the nearby military base, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, and Leonardtown.  Like many Maryland communities, Great Mills does not have its own local government, reflecting the state’s long history of strong county governance.

The area around Great Mills is rapidly developing, blending residential, commercial, and recreational spaces. Along Great Mills Road, you’ll find shopping centers, office spaces, playgrounds, and sports facilities, alongside low- to middle-income housing developments.  Great Mills High School serves students in the lower part of St. Mary’s County.

While modern development continues, traditional farming, fishing, and crabbing communities still exist, though they face economic pressures.  Great Mills has deep roots in Maryland’s agricultural history.  Following the settlement of St. Mary’s City, early planters established farms in the area by the mid-to-late 17th century, forming part of the colony’s agricultural expansion.

Two Medal of Honor recipients, William H. Barnes and James H. Harris, were residents of Great Mills.  Both were free African-American farmers who served in the Union Army during the Civil War.  They are memorialized at the United States Colored Troops Memorial Statue in nearby Lexington Park.  This memorial honors Barnes, Harris, and the more than 700 African-American soldiers and sailors from St. Mary’s County who served in the Union forces.  Special ceremonies are held annually to commemorate their contributions and preserve their legacy.

Great Mills today is a community that blends historic significance, suburban growth, and active local life, making it a unique and vibrant part of St. Mary’s County.
