Much of Accokeek to the west of Route 210 is designated the “Moyoane Reserve.”  There are mid-century, individually-designed homes on wooded lots of at least 5-acres.  There are two community educational attractions in Accokeek.  The first is Hard Bargain Farm, managed by the Ferguson Foundation.  The second is the National Colonial Farm.  It is  under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service.  Both these sites have numerous special events, including an annual Oktoberfest, and a “theater in the woods.”

In 1960, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) wanted to build a water treatment plant in Mockley Point, which was part of the Accokeek shoreline.  Various people and organizations protested against the water treatment plant. That was because it would disrupt the view of Mount Vernon and Fort Washington Park.

In 1961, a law was signed by President John F. Kennedy that designated 133 acres around Mockley Point as a national landmark.  Both the Accokeek Foundation and the Alice Ferguson Foundation donated another 505 acres.  WSSC was not allowed to build the water treatment plant there.  It was able, though, to build the plant in a different area of Accokeek later in the decade.
