Baltimore County has the third-largest population of any county in the state of Maryland and is also the third largest by land area. T he county is part of both the Baltimore Metropolitan Area and the larger Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. Baltimore County has a diversified economy, with particular emphasis on education, government, and health care, and it is home to several universities.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Baltimore County covers approximately 682 square miles, including about 598 square miles of land and 83 square miles of water. Much of the county is hilly, with elevations often reaching around 800 feet above tidal waters. The lowest elevation is sea level along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. The highest point in Baltimore County is approximately 960 feet above sea level near the Pennsylvania state line, which forms the county’s northern border.
Much of Baltimore County is suburban in character. To the east, the county borders Harford County and the Chesapeake Bay. Baltimore City is located to the south and is completely surrounded by Baltimore County. The Patapsco River forms part of the county’s southern and southwestern boundary. To the west, Baltimore County borders Carroll County. Northern Baltimore County is largely rural, featuring rolling hills and extensive deciduous forests.
