Benedict was originally a fishing village that was established in the late 17th century. It was named Benedict-Leonardtown. This was in honor of Benedict Leonard Calvert, who lived from 1700 to 1732. He was the 5th Proprietary Governor of Maryland. Benedict served under his older brother, Charles Calvert, 5th Baron and Lord Baltimore.
During the War of 1812, General Robert Ross and his British Army landed in Benedict. This happened on August 18, 1814. The landing occurred after they fought fierce naval battles with American naval forces in the Patuxent River. From Benedict, the British forces began their march to Washington, DC.
Benedict was the site of Camp Stanton. It was built in October 1863 for the Maryland 7th Regiment. The Camp was also where the Maryland 19th Regiment of the United States Colored Troops was formed on December 19, 1863. It was home to freed slaves. They were purchased by the United States Government to serve as soldiers.
