Cheltenham shares a border to the west with the community of Clinton. Located to the south is the community of Brandywine. Located to the east across the Patuxent River is the community of Dunkirk in Calvert County.
The community is named after Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. The Cheltenham Youth Detention Center is a juvenile correctional facility. It was founded in the 1870s as a “House of Reformation for Colored Children” on a farm owned by Enoch Pratt. He was a Baltimore merchant, banker, and philanthropist. Cheltenham is also home to the Southern Maryland Regional Farmers Market, and the Cheltenham State Veterans Cemetery.
