Hollywood got its name in 1867. That’s when a store owner at Thompson’s General Store near the Uniontown section of Hollywood needed a name for the post office inside the store. He was inspired by the gigantic holly tree planted in front of the store and named the post office Hollywood.
Hollywood is home to distinctive landmarks such as the congregation of St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church. The church was founded in 1690. Hollywood also is home to the nationally renowned Sotterley Plantation located on the banks of the Patuxent River. Sotterley was founded in 1703 by James Bowles, who was a wealthy planter. It eventually changed hands to former Maryland Governor George Plater. Later, in the 20th century it was owned by Louisa Satterlee and her husband. She was the daughter of J.P. Morgan. Hollywood was also home to a manor house known as Resurrection Manor. It was thought to have been built in 1640 by Thomas Cornwalleys. He was the grandfather of the General Lord Cornwallis who surrendered to George Washington at the Battle of Yorktown during the American Revolutionary War.
Hollywood is now a small rural community with large farms that produce soybeans, corn, hay, grains, and wheats. It also used to produce tobacco. Hollywood is home to an industrial park where corporations such as Northrop Grumman have branch offices. There is a training and conference center for engineers attached to the nearby Patuxent River Naval Air Station in the community of Lexington Park. There are many roads that lead to the shore of the Patuxent River. Because Hollywood is not an incorporated town, it is under the authority of the St. Mary’s County Government.
