Learn about Hughesville, Maryland

Hughesville is a small town located in Charles County.  It shares a border to the north with the community of Waldorf.  Located to the south is the community of Charlotte Hall.  Hughesville shares a border to the west with the community of Bryantown.  Located to the east is the community of Aquasco in Prince George’s County and also the Patuxent River. 

It started as a tobacco market town.  The  tobacco warehouses now contain second-hand thrift stores, along with boutique gift and craft shops.  Even though Hughesville is a small town, it is considered to be the geographic center of the tri-county Southern Maryland region.  The town is home to the  Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO).  It operates a 5.5-megawatt solar farm that generates enough power for 600 homes and offsets the pollution of 1,600 cars.  The Tri-County Animal Shelter is located nearby.  Hughesville is also the home of the Southern Maryland Association of Realtors (SMAR) and a homeless women’s shelter.  The College of Southern Maryland built its fourth campus in the town. 

A multi-lane bypass of Hughesville on Maryland Route 5 opened in February 2007.  The bypass eliminated the rush-hour traffic jams at the town’s single traffic signal.  The bypass has two unusual side-by-side traffic roundabouts.  Hughesville has no traditional grid-layout streets.  Businesses are located along the highway.  There are also several very small housing developments.

There is a historic home in Hughesville.  It is known as Truman’s Place.  The original structure was built in 1770.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.  Hughesville has a total area of 11.2 square miles.  Of that area, 11.12 square miles is land and 0.08 square miles is water.
