Learn about Brandywine, MD

Brandywine is a small town located in Prince George’s County.  It is part of the county’s Rural Tier.  Brandywine is mostly rural, but it also has a suburban and commercial center.  The town and surrounding community are divided by Crain Highway.  Brandywine is bordered by the community of Accokeek to the west, Clinton to the north, and Upper Marlboro to the east.  To the south, it borders the community of Waldorf, which is located in Charles County.  The Brandywine ZIP code extends into both counties.

William H. Early owned property in Brandywine during the mid-19th century and is credited with naming the town.  It is believed that he named it after the Battle of Brandywine, which was fought during the Revolutionary War.  Brandywine began developing around 1873.  The town is located along the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad’s Pope’s Creek (Southern Maryland) line and was the only town on the route to develop into a true railroad town.  The Bank of Brandywine received its charter in 1912 and was formerly known as the Southern Maryland German-American Bank.

Despite being located between the growing communities of Clinton and Waldorf, much of Brandywine remained rural for many years.  This began to change at the start of the 21st century, when shopping centers with large retail stores were built along Crain Highway.  During the same period, several small residential subdivisions were also developed.
