Learn about Brandywine, Maryland

Brandywine is a small town located in Prince George’s County.  It is part of the County’s rural tier.  Brandywine is mostly rural, but has a suburban and commercial center.  The town and surrounding community are split by Crain Highway.  Brandywine is bordered by the community of Accokeek to the west, the community of Clinton to the north, and the community of Upper Marlboro to the east.  Brandywine is bordered to the south by the community of Waldorf that is located in Charles County.  The Brandywine zip code is found in both Counties.

William H. Early owned property in Brandywine in the mid-19th century.  He is the person who named the town.  It is thought that he named it after the Battle of Brandywine that was fought during the Revolutionary War.  Brandywine was developed in about 1873.  The town is on the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad’s Pope Creek (Southern Maryland) line.  Brandywine was the only town on the route that developed into a railroad town.   The Bank of Brandywine received its charter in 1912.  It was previously the Southern Maryland German-American Bank.

Although it is located between the community of Clinton and the community of Waldorf, much of Brandywine remained rural.  That changed at the start of the 21st century.  Shopping centers with big-box stores were built along Crain Highway.  At the same time, many small residential subdivisions were also developed.
