White Plains is a community in Charles County, Maryland. It is located just south of the community of Waldorf, Maryland. White Plains shares a border with the community of Pomfret to the southwest and the Town of Hughesville to the east. The commercial portion of White Plains lies along U.S. Route 301. The largest concentration of residences with the White Plains mailing address is located six to seven miles to the west. The homes are in large subdivisions along Billingsley Road. The ongoing development is being done along the St. Charles Parkway between the community of Waldorf and the town of La Plata. The White Plains area is experiencing population sprawl from the adjacent communities. It is estimated that about 10,000 homes will be built in the next 10 years.
White Plains features new office parks. There is also a scenic rail trail bike and hiking path starting in White Plains. The Indian Head Rail Trail ends in the Town of Indian Head, Maryland. The Charles County Department of Health has its headquarters in White Plains. There is also a public golf course.
Plans to complete an east-west connector road in the area began many years ago. They were mired in controversy because of alleged adverse effects on the environment. All work on the project was stopped. It is unknown if the connector will ever be completed.
