According to the United States Census Bureau, Baltimore County covers 682 square miles.  That includes 598 square miles of land and 83 square miles of water.  Most of the County has hills that often rise to a height of 800 feet above the tidal water.  The lowest elevation is sea level along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay.  The highest elevation in Baltimore County is approximately 960 feet above sea level near the Pennsylvania state line, the County’s northern border.  

Much of Baltimore County is suburban.  Located to the east is the Patapsco River, the Chesapeake Bay, and Carroll County.  The southern side of the County surrounds Baltimore City.  Northern Baltimore County is mostly rural and has many rolling hills and deciduous forests.  The County borders Harford County to the west.
