Learn About Chaptico, Maryland

Chaptico is a rural community in St. Mary’s County located along the Wicomico River in Southern Maryland.  The area is known for its deep colonial history, waterfront setting, and nearby recreational attractions.  Chaptico borders Mechanicsville to the north.  To the south are the communities of Bushwood and Clements.  The community shares its eastern border with Helen and Morganza.  Across the Wicomico River to the west is Mount Victoria in Charles County.

Chaptico is located on Chaptico Run, which forms a bay as it flows into the Wicomico River.  The name “Chaptico” is believed to come from an Algonquian term meaning “big broad river,” and may be connected to the historic Chaptico tribe.  The area was visited by Charles Calvert in 1663.  During the colonial period, Chaptico developed into an active shipping port.  Its commercial importance declined during the 18th century after silting in the Wicomico River limited navigation.

Chaptico played a role in several periods of American history.  During the War of 1812, British forces damaged Christ Episcopal Church and desecrated the church cemetery.  Several members of the family of Francis Scott Key are buried there in a family vault.  Some prominent residents of Chaptico were also known for Southern sympathies during the American Civil War and were jailed during the conflict.

Several historic properties in and around Chaptico are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  They include Bachelor’s Hope, Christ Episcopal Church, and Deep Falls.  These sites reflect the community’s long colonial and early American history.

Chaptico is located near several well-known Southern Maryland attractions.  They include Maryland International Raceway, Budds Creek Motocross Park, and Wicomico Shores Golf Course.  The surrounding area also offers boating, fishing, and waterfront recreation along the Wicomico River.

Chaptico remains a quiet rural community known for waterfront scenery, historic churches and landmarks, agricultural surroundings, access to outdoor recreation, and a slower-paced Southern Maryland lifestyle.  Its combination of history, natural beauty, and proximity to regional attractions gives Chaptico a distinctive character within St. Mary’s County.
