Learn About Chaptico, Maryland

Chaptico is a rural community in St. Mary’s County.  It shares a border to the north with the community of Mechanicsville.  Located to the south is the community of Bushwood and the community of Clements.  Chaptico shares a border to the east with the community of Helen and the community of Morganza.  Located to the west across the Wicomico River is the community of Mount Victoria in Charles County

Chaptico is located on Chaptico Run, which forms a bay as it enters the Wicomico River.  The name Chaptico may be Algonquian for “big-broad-river-it-is.”  It may be related to the Chaptico tribe.  This friendly tribe was visited by Gov. Charles Calvert in 1663.  Chaptico was an active shipping town until the Wicomico River became blocked by silt in the 18th century.  

The British vandalized Chaptico during the War of 1812.  They caused extensive damage to Christ Episcopal Church and desecrated its cemetery.  Several members of Francis Scott Key’s family are buried in the cemetery in a Family vault.  Some of’ Chaptico’s prominent citizens were pro-Southern and jailed during the Civil War.

Chaptico has several properties that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  They include Bachelor’s Hope, Christ Episcopal Church, and Deep Falls.  There are several attractions that are located close to Chaptico.  They include Maryland International Raceway, Budds Creek Raceway, and Wicomico Shores golf course.
