Can I Change the Locks on
the Home When I Move In?
The lease agreement is very clear regarding locks and security. Tenants are not permitted to install additional locks or change existing locks without prior written consent from the property manager.
For your safety, all property locks are changed immediately after a tenant moves out, even if all known keys are returned. At move-in, tenants are typically provided with two keys. Additional keys may be requested and will be provided at the tenant’s expense.
If written permission is granted for a tenant to change the locks, the tenant is responsible for ensuring that the property manager receives a copy of the new key.
All keys must be returned upon lease termination or when vacating the property. Tenants are responsible for reimbursing the landlord, as additional rent, for the cost of changing any locks or replacing keys that are lost or damaged. The charge for changing locks is $150 per door and may be deducted from the security deposit. This policy is outlined in the Tenant Move-Out Check List.
